The world of officiating is in crisis, as referees have left the profession in droves due to low-quality education and an increasingly adversarial relationship with spectators. In North America alone, the number of sports officials has declined by 20% in 5 years. More referees are retiring, and 80% of new recruits leave within 2 years of starting.
RefMasters is on a mission to revolutionize referee education and bridge the empathy gap with players, coaches and fans. Founded by a pair of NBA Finals referees, today we’re making an impact with people across multiple sports and countries who are looking for a better way to ref. We’re doing this through our team of expert officials and by embracing new technologies.
In an industry defined by adherence to tradition and rules, we focus on being the first: the first educational and social platform for referees (RefMasters App), the first rules-based training program for players (Rule IQ), and the first multi-sport officiating school led by professional league referees (RefMasters University). We also have many other “firsts” in store.
We’re unveiling the curtain on topics of high interest and low information. Fans hungry for more of their favorite sport are tuning in to learn about the game in way they haven’t heard before. Our team is passionate about spreading the message and are confident in its appeal. It’s core to our mission to humanize referees and show officiating in a new light.
